About this painting:

This was the first charcoal I had done in years and also the first nude ever.

The work evolved over time—one of the beauties of working with charcoal is that it allows the artist to have complete control over speed of working. I was able to do some, assess it for a minute or days, then return and tweak here and there. This was a wonderful way to uncover subtle geometric relationships and also to increase contrast

Chalk was later added to pick out the highlights.

For much more in-depth information about the fascinating themes in this work, along with a glimpse of the finished oil painting, click here. What isn’t stressed on that page though, is the fact that the painting is a metaphor for how  propaganda lies are often accepted by the masses because they are spread widely and the also have the appearance of superficial truth—just like the anatomy of this figure in the finished work. It is an important point, particularly since the work was painted when George Bush and Tony Blair were involved in a war on Iraq.  In this context, the building takes on more ominous corporate connotations.
