About this painting:
Merge, inspired by a first visit to Australia, reinterprets the form of a tree-trunk (at Noosa Heads) which rose and widened, splitting into two. It stood starkly upon a cliff-edge with only nearby.
Impact was heightened by removing sky and ocean behind. Fauvist use of colour juxtaposes excitement with relaxation and with retrospect this work is a very relevant take upon the dissociation of consciousness which occurs in hypnotic states and trauma etc. Similarly, it depicts choices weaving in and out of each other within a unified ‘body’. So much so that a strong parallel is often drawn between the limbs of the tree and the circulatory system and musculature of human anatomy.
Once finished, the canvas was rotated to find the position that felt most satisfying. With the stylised details of the tree-trunk at the bottom, it looked like an alien landscape - interesting, but a tad obvious.
Merge later influenced other works, such as Oxo Tower and 5pm Awakening.
Dissociative mental states are depicted in a more biographical context in Indifference. |
