About this painting:

 

This painting was Cary’s first pairing of shadow outlines with relationship themes. A window suggested shapes and thereafter forms were allowed to be traced with free associations. Unexpectedly, four entities emerged to make this a biographical work. Cary continues:

“The red figure represented my sense of disconnection and confusion in relation to my partner of the time. The slackened jaw indicated surprise as the chin propping by a shrunken red hand conveyed watchful analysis. I was trying to make sense of it all. The heart is enlarged with a lot of love but scabbed at its core - a wound that was hidden from the world in order to maintain the pretense of a functional couple. The relationship inflicted ongoing pain, evidenced by the bleeding shoulder, raw from supporting in ways others did not know about.  A single drop of blood flies left off-canvas — a hint of forthcoming escape.

This red figure is supported by an animal whose earthy simplicity is conveyed with yellow ochre  - my dog at the time. Her back is turning away, her ‘fight or flight’ escape response is evident, perhaps revealing the constant random threats I had to save her from at the time..
