About this painting:

'Two' was based upon a black and white family photograph. The intention was to convey the closeness between the two figures. Initially, the details of their faces were included. However, I wanted to heighten the  loving 'atmosphere,' and found that with them  removed, the bond became much more apparent. It felt more enveloping for the viewer and freed the image from only relating to two specific people.

An artist can get bogged down in trying to capture every detail, particularly with commissioned portraits, but this piece demonstrates that reducing to one or two central ingredients and removing all that distracts from them can be a very successful approach. Some things in life are best expressed with simplicity, and this can particularly apply to a feeling like love.

The cloak falling down to the right was, at the time, one of the most heavenly areas I had ever painted. I still love it.
