Creating the 5pm Phoenix - a painter's subconscious in action
If play fails, view it on Cary’s official facebook page instead.

Through my work, I have learned how ’available’ the 'unconscious' is. Often the hand will slip with a supposed error or the paint will just feel right a different way than expected, and when I step back I find that something new and meaningful has arrived. Such moments are the best
creativity has to offer. This clip was filmed during the painting of 5pm
Awakening and clearly reveals how symbolism often surfaces in my
work. I finally toned the 'phoenix' down and blended it in for the finished
work, but this is a valuable glimpse of how things surface with very
precise meaning. Can we really ever think of ourselves as totally
unconscious. I think not. We are a multitude of levels of consciousness,
all of them potentially meaningful.
