About this painting:

This preliminary painting is a favourite personal work. The portrait depicts two extremes of the subject’s personality; a mania for play and sleepy adorability.

Vibrant colours are feature mainly on the more playful depiction; the tilted head is blue to suggest great intelligence, whilst orange inquisitive ears convey alert playfulness and spontaneity. The style is essentially Cubist, a reference to primitive art to convey the universality of impulses and instincts.

Elsewhere, the subject is close to sleep. Colour is more naturalistic here; black and white with a hint of dreamy magenta.  One eye is watchful, but the pleasure of sleep beckons. Nearby, blue again suggests mental activity, but less conscious. Below, a sandy orange represents comfort. Green leaves symbolise a love of the outdoors which will be familiar to anyone who has every enjoyed the company of a collie, especially a border collie.
together as one.

The painting influenced 5pm Awakening.
